A building project primer for senior living decision-makers
Part 1: Set goals to save time & costs
Renovating space to maximize occupancy? Building anew to meet the needs of retiring "boomers"? This, the first in a three-part series of invaluable tips on the design/build process by senior living project manager Mark Yerkes of Horst Construction, can help ensure the success of your building project.
Clearly determine your goals
Identify the needs of all stakeholders and don't overlook small details. Ask your nursing staff about storage requirements. Talk to your custodial staff about cart size and access needs. Bottom line: The more thorough you are now, the more time and money you'll save throughout the project. Details matter.
Communicate your goals with precision
By doing so, your design team will better understand your objectives and you'll minimize the need to have building plans redrawn. Bottom line: Clarity results in more efficiency and savings all around.
Understand the size of your project
To help stakeholders understand the scale of your project without the difficulty of reading blueprints, layout critical spaces like nurse stations and patient areas with masking tape in a large room. Bottom line: Fewer redraws, change orders and costs to remove completed work and secure re-approvals by authorities … no added time and costs to rebuild the space to your true needs.
