Lancaster, PA — Horst Construction, a Horst Group company of Lancaster, recently made two management additions to its preconstruction and specialty services units.
Pete Shaub, of Millersville, PA, has been named Preconstruction Services Manager. He will be responsible for business development and managing the preconstruction process for new commercial and industrial clients. Shaub has more than 30 years of experience in the construction industry, most recently as CEO of Performance Construction Co., a subsidiary of Quandel Enterprises, Inc. in Harrisburg, PA, and prior to that as director of business development at Kinsley Construction of York. He served as a Lancaster County commissioner from 2000-2007. Shaub earned a B.A. degree from East Stroudsburg State University and was a 1st Lt. Company Commander in the United States Marine Corps from 1976-1979.
Ryan Null, of Lancaster, PA, has been hired as Project Manager for the company’s Special Services Group. He will be responsible for managing commercial renovation projects for clients throughout Pennsylvania. Null, who has more than 15 years of construction-industry experience, was most recently a project manager and estimator for Cain Contracting, Inc., in Columbia, MD.

Horst Construction completes Country Meadows expansion project in Allentown
Lancaster, PA — Horst Construction, a Horst Group company of Lancaster, recently completed the new independent-living residence at Country Meadows of Allentown, in Lower Macungie Township, Lehigh County. A grand opening celebration of the new $9 million residence was held on December 8.

Lancaster, PA — Horst Construction, a Horst Group company of Lancaster, recently completed the new independent-living residence at Country Meadows of Allentown, in Lower Macungie Township, Lehigh County. A grand opening celebration of the new $9 million residence was held on December 8.
The 53,000 square-foot project, which includes 50 studio-style and one- and two-bedroom apartments, is an expansion of Country Meadows’ 48-acre, all-rental retirement community that also provides assisted living, memory support and restorative care services. The project also includes upgrades to the senior-living campus that added more public spaces and amenities, such as a new chapel/movie theatre, beauty salon and a bistro for restaurant-style dining. Green technologies, including a high-efficiency HVAC system that’s 35% more efficient than the industry standard, were used in the construction and upgrades.

Horst Construction has been named the design-build construction firm on the $2.65 million addition to the St. Sophia/Ss. Faith, Hope & Agape Greek Orthodox Church of Valley Forge, in Jeffersonville, PA.
The first of five phases, the addition includes the design and construction of a 7,386 sq. ft. sanctuary that will feature an ornate dome ceiling, iconography around the dome and sanctuary walls, as well as seating in the nave and mezzanine for 420 worshippers. Groundbreaking on the project occurred in March; completion of phase 1 is scheduled for spring 2012.
Architect on the project is CJK Design Group, of San Francisco, CA.

Landisville Intermediate Center, a new-school building project in the Hempfield School District valued at $739,000. Estimated completion is August, 2012.
An upgrade to the Stevens Avenue waste-water treatment plant, in Lancaster City. Project value is $318,000. Estimated completion is spring, 2012.
Detention pond remediation at Millcreek Square, located in East Lampeter Township. Project value is $292,000. The project is scheduled for completion at the end of this month.
In Lehigh, PA, Horst Excavating was selected to replace storm water and drainage culverts on Irving Street in Hanover Township. The project is valued at $454,000.

Promotions include:
Larry J. Brandt to chief estimator, from senior estimator, a role he's held at Horst for the past 12 years. His new responsibilities include overseeing the estimating department's daily operations, estimating projects, and reviewing and updating estimating systems. Brandt has 37 years of construction experience.
Melanie L. Weir to project coordinator, from administrative assistant, a post she's held at Horst since 2008. Her new responsibilities include preparing owner and subcontractor contracts, change orders, submittals and permit applications. Weir has 16 years of construction-industry experience.
Heather Ussery-Thompson to office operations manager, from administrative assistant, a role she's held at Horst Excavating, a division of Horst Construction, for two years. She will manage the company's daily internal operations.
New hires include:
Thomas R. Kahler is project manager for Lancaster Bible College's new Student Learning Commons now under construction. Kahler was most recently project manager for Wagman Construction, York, and has 36 years of construction and project management experience. He earned a bachelor's of science degree in civil engineering from Drexel University.
Robert L. Weir has been hired as a project estimator. With 16 years of construction experience, Weir was most recently an estimator for Howard Robson Inc. and was also an estimator for Warfel Construction, both of Lancaster. He earned an associate's degree in specialized technologies (drafting) from York Technical Institute.
Steven J. Smith is also a project estimator. Formerly a senior estimator with Triple H Construction, Lancaster, Smith has 15 years of experience in construction industry. He earned a bachelor's of science degree in building construction management from Pennsylvania College of Technology, Williamsport, PA.

Horst Construction was awarded three major projects, two in Lancaster, PA, and a project in Westminster, MD, representing a combined value of more than $11 million.
In Lancaster, Horst was hired as the design/build contractor, is building the new $8.1 million Student Learning Commons at Lancaster Bible College (in Manheim Township). The 42,500-square-foot, three-story structure will feature a mezzanine and three levels of book shelving within the core building. (LBC owns one of the larger book collections worldwide for accredited bible colleges — 268,000 items, including 155,000 paper volumes.) Professional resource, writing, tutoring and performing arts resource center will be integrated within the building. To maximize energy efficiency, a geothermal heat pump will provide heating and cooling, while a building management system will control student comfort and selected lighting functions. Groundbreaking is February 22, with construction beginning in March. Completion is slated for the start of the 2012-2013 academic year.
At Mountville Church of the Brethren, in Mountville, PA, (Mountville Borough) Horst is starting phase two of a project that began last summer with the installation of air conditioning to the sanctuary and most of the existing building. In the new phase — a 7,000 square foot renovation — a lobby with an elevator will be added along with an exterior canopy, expanded parking lot and revised floor plan for offices and bathrooms. Groundbreaking for phase two is Sunday, March 6 and project completion is scheduled for August 2011. Horst is the construction manager with partial design responsibility on this $1.2 million project.
In Westminster, MD, a multi-phase $1.4 million project is underway at St. Paul's UCC. With Horst hired as design/build contractor, the project includes demolition of an existing two-story building and the construction of a 4,100 square foot building. It also entails the renovation and expansion of the church's commercial kitchen, providing elevator access from the new building to all three floors of the existing church facility, and constructing additional classrooms, a music suite and new ADA restrooms. The final phase will include remodeling most of the remaining existing church except for the sanctuary.

Horst Excavating, a sister company to Horst Construction, began site-work preparation for the project in August. Another Horst affiliate, Horst Masonry, will perform foundation work and exterior brickwork.
In Odenton, MD, Horst Construction is building an 8,783 sq. ft. addition to Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church. The $2.85 million project — the first of a three-phase expansion — includes a multi-purpose room/sanctuary, youth area, lobby/café and classrooms. Horst Excavating is undertaking all site work and excavating on the project, which is scheduled for completion in June 2011.

The cornerstone of this 18-month, $8.4 million project is a new 300-seat concert hall with a new entry area and lobby. A new rehearsal hall, art gallery and recording studio will also be constructed. Renovations include refurbishing the existing 675-seat auditorium, music studio and classrooms.

Celebrate Life Christian Church, Lititz, PA, broke ground recently for its new 8,000 sq. ft. worship center, which will feature a new sanctuary and two-story core building in phase one of the project and a proposed family life center to be built during phase two.
